South Korean football fans hold a banner reading ‘Korean football is dead’ at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, on June 30, 2014, as South Korean national football team players returned from Brazil.

A national sports team returning home from a humiliating defeat can often face the wrath of angry fans. South Korea’s national soccer players arrived back from the World Cup on Monday to something a little more extreme: a banner declaring the death of the local game.

As they lined up for a team photo at Incheon, Seoul’s main international airport, the players were showered  with “yeot,” a traditional candy that is also a common synonym for a Korean expletive.

“Eat yeot!” yelled an angry taffy-thrower at the team, according to reports from the airport.

The anti-fans also held up a banner printed in a design used for a funerals that said: “South Korean soccer is dead!!”

South Korea finished bottom of its group at the World Cup in one of its poorest showings in over a decade after defeats against Belgium and Algeria, and a draw against Russia.

It’s unclear at whom the grievances were directed. Some reports cited other members of the same angry group protesting against what they called a corrupt soccer association that they alleged selects its squad based on politics rather than skill.

Coach Hong Myung-bo, who blamed himself for the poor showing following the defeat against Belgium, apologized in front of the Korean press and remained uncommitted about his own future. A former national hero and soccer star, Hong’s contract runs through next January.
